Back in 1977, when Down to Earth was founded by a group of friends in Wailuku, Maui, "health food" was considered unconventional. The idea of improving your health through organic and natural foods and a vegetarian lifestyle was a passion for some, but it was not a concept many people thought about at the time.
Thirty-five years later, thanks to those passionate friends on Maui and others like them across our nation, this novel idea has become part of the American mainstream. Everyone from Dr. Oz to Michelle Obama, from the American Dietetic Association to the American Heart Association, publicly urge people to improve their health by reducing their consumption of refined foods and animal products and increasing whole, plant-based foods in their diet. They're singing our tune!

The positive environmental benefits of organic farming are well-documented. Organic farming preserves biodiversity and soil fertility, prevents soil erosion and reduces contamination of the water supply from toxic runoff. Anecdotal evidence and common sense tell us that organic food tastes better and is less likely to be contaminated with pesticides. However, when it comes to the assertion that organic food is actually more nutritious than non-organic food, most scientists agree there is a need for more research. Fortunately, studies of this type are increasing and many recent studies are concluding that organic food may indeed have higher levels of some nutrients and antioxidants and lower levels of nitrates and pesticides.
